Machine Distribution. Microcomputing Working Papers Series.
Drexel Univ., Philadelphia, PA. Microcomputing Program.
During the academic year 1983-84, Drexel University instituted a new policy requiring all incoming students to have access to a microcomputer. The computer chosen to fulfill this requirement was the Macintosh from Apple Computer, Inc. This paper provides a brief description of the process undertaken to select the appropriate computer (i.e., specifications, vendor considerations, computer availability) and a more detailed description of the method of distribution to students once the first shipment (2,000 units) of Macintoshs arrived on campus in February 1984. Among the topics covered are the task of delivering both the hardware and accompanying software to students, assignment of pick-up times, steps in the distribution procedure, and repair requests received during the distribution period.
