Self-Directed Work Teams in a Post-Apartheid Gold Mine: Perspectives from the Rock Face.
Phatkathi, Timothy Sizwe
Journal of Workplace Learning, v14 n7 p278-85 2002
A participant-observation study in a South African mining company that used self directed work team training identified organizational constraints that hindered training effectiveness: lack of materials, machinery breakdown, decentralized budget, and imposed standards. Miners more often used improvisation and initiative to solve daily problems, suggesting that training must draw on worker's experience and knowledge. (SK)
