Moving Sustainability Forward: Energy Efficient Renovations and Solar Solutions
Taylor, Bill
Educational Facility Planner, v45 n3 p47-49 2011
For any goal to be a "smart goal" it needs to be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time sensitive. This is equally true for sustainability goals for educational facilities. Evidence abounds that "green strategies" greatly impact both the academic and operational performance of a school. Agencies from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to the American Lung Association to the National Education Association agree on the following: Improved indoor-environmental-quality assures healthy students and staff, resulting in lower absentee rates. While new schools seem to have the greatest advantage in providing the latest in sustainable, high-performance technology, the fact is that the average school in the U.S. was built over 40 years ago according to the National Center for Education Statistics. The good news is that even these older school campuses may have equal opportunity to improve their energy efficiency factors through renovation or re-building to help move sustainability forward.
