Study aim: To assess spine curvatures, postural categories and scolioses in short and tall children aged 13 years. Material and methods: Short-statured (below Percentile 10) and tall-statured (above Percentile 90) boys (n = 13 and 18, respectively) and girls (n = 10 and 11, respectively) aged 13 years were studied. The following angles of spine curvatures were recorded with the use of posturometer S: upper thoracic ([alpha]), thoraco-lumbar ([beta]), lumbosacral ([gamma]), head deflexion vs. apex of thoracic kyphosis ([epsilon]), thoracic kyphosis ([chi]), lumbar lordosis ([delta]) and sum of angles ([sigma]), as well as scolioses. Results: Most spinal angles were, on the average, greater in tall-statured than in short-statured subject, especially in girls, greatest differences being noted for [delta] (22.0 [plus or minus] 9.5 and 15.8 [plus or minus] 5.3[degrees] in boys and girls, respectively). Nearly 40% of all children had scolioses, mostly mild thoracic, only 3 children having Cobb's angle above 10[degrees]. Most short-statured children had normal body posture while about half of the tall-statured ones exhibited abnormal postures. Conclusions: Since the age of 13 years falls in the critical period of posturogenesis, a steady monitoring of body posture of children and youths is worth recommending in order to prevent postural disorders and their progression.
