Environmental Design Research. Volume Two: Symposia and Workshops. Community Development Series.
Preiser, Wolfgang F. E., Ed.
The contents of this volume represent the invited contributions to the conference and are categorized according to special (invited) addresses, symposia, and workshops. Special addresses were conceptualized to view environmental design research in a holistic way, incorporating changing societal and political conditions. Lynton K. Caldwell spoke on the "Struggle for Priorities: Changing Contexts of Environmental Politics," Magoroh Maruyama spoke about the "Principle of Heterogenization and Symbiotization: Implications for Planning and Environmental Design," and Heinz von Foerster addressed the topic "On Constructing a Reality." Six symposia were held that covered (1) environmental design research in the social and political context, (2) the theory of man-environment relations, (3) environmental cognition, (4) selected instruments and measures in environmental analysis (a methodological critique), (5) design languages and methods, and (6) computer aided design. Twenty-one workshops expanded on these themes as well as introduced new areas of thought, such as gaming and simulation, low cost housing for Yaqui Indians and Chicanos, planning environments for the aged, and childhood city. Volume one of the proceedings (EA 005 401) contains a collection of the research papers selected for presentation. (Author/MLF)
