Over a three month period in spring 2004, The British Association of Advisers and Lecturers in Physical Education (BAALPE) and New Media (a PLATO Learning Company) researched and evaluated models for harnessing ICT in physical education (PE). The project developed a unique ICT infrastructure for two PE departments to evaluate the impact of ICT on disaffected students. This research led to a more complete understanding of the implications, effectiveness, and obstacles to the application of ICT in PE departments and will eventually demonstrate the effect that ICT and PE can have on disaffected students. Each school involved in the project was provided with an interactive whiteboard, a digital video camera, video analysis software, biology software (from New Media), data logging, and access to the PE Consortium web site and support. The investment in technological tools created a strong ICT foundation upon which PE departments could build and expand their implementation of ICT in PE. Throughout the project, the researchers encountered various difficulties, including unexpected training requirements and inadequate technology already existing in the schools. The research found that simply providing hardware did not create a successful implementation of improved curriculum and opportunities for pupils. Equal consideration needed to be given to the provision of effective software, teacher support, and training. Once the training and software was provided, the reaction of both teachers and students was quite positive, and opened the door for future studies on the effects of ICT in PE with disaffected students. The project also created possibilities for future cross-curricular activities and ICT implementations, both in the UK and abroad.
