This final issue draws to a close the quarterly, "Focus in Change" and its companion, "Research and the Classroom," Approximately, the theme is the future of public education, asking four educational leaders what such a future may hold. The views of the following people are presented: (1) Michael W. Apple, John Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; (2) Thomas A. Romberg, Sears Roebuck Foundation-Bascom Professor in Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; (3) James A. Banks, Professor of Education and Director of the Center for Multicultural Education at the University of Washington, Seattle; and (4) Stephen K. Miller, Associate Professor of Educational Foundations at the University of Louisville. They were asked the following questions: (1) What impact, if any, will the Goals 2000 legislation have on public education? (2) What has been accomplished in the past 25 years? (3) What has been learned about schooling that can inform future reform efforts? (4) What works and what doesn't? (5) What is the wisest agenda for the future, and how best to pursue the course? and (6) What words of hope can be offered to America's teachers? The publication concludes with commentaries by Florence L. Johnson, Director of the National Center for Effective Schools, and Anne Turnbaugh Lockwood, Communications Director for the Center. (LMI)
