Let's Go to Market! Field Trips to Discover Economics and Cultures
Gomez, Diana
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v22 n3 p21-24 Jan-Feb 2010
In this article, the author describes how her first grade class embarked on a journey of learning through a unit of study about local food markets. The study was a rich exploration of the cultural diversity of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as an introduction to basic concepts about economics. Through their trips to a farm and three different Asian specialty markets that reflect a different culture, the author and her first grade class transformed their classroom into a market, where parents and other classes in the Germantown Friends School were invited to visit, shop, and learn. The author shares how she planned the unit and how the study was launched. (Contains 3 notes.)
