Decatur Public Schools District 61, IL.
Defining listening as the active and conscious process of hearing, recognizing, and interpreting or comprehending language, this guide provides numerous activities to promote the listening skills of primary and intermediate grade students. Specifically, the activities described seek to develop (1) the ability of young students to listen appreciatively and derive enjoyment from listening to speakers, music, drama, and nature sounds; (2) the ability to listen carefully and thoughtfully in order to follow directions, find answers, grasp main ideas, obtain information, and gain new ideas and interests; and (3) the ability to listen critically in order to evaluate information and ideas, draw conclusions, and recognize bias.
