PACER Center, Inc., Minneapolis, MN.; National Endowment for Financial Education, Greenwood Village, CO.
This booklet on money management and financial resources is targeted to parents of a child under the age of 18 who has a disability. The guide outlines step-by-step financial management techniques and provides information on resources. Chapter 1 focuses on the need for parents to organize financial information. Parents are urged to keep their records in one place, make a spending plan, and learn ways to manage debt. Worksheets are provided for developing a spending plan. Chapter 2 discusses health, life, and disability insurance policies. Different types of medical coverage are explained and a chart is provided to help parents analyze their policies and learn about their benefits. Strategies for working with health care providers are given. This chapter also reviews rights under the Family and Medical Leave Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act, and provides information on lifetime maximums, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), and federal and state insurance programs. The issues of medial privacy are also discussed. Chapter 3 addresses planning for the future, retirement and savings programs, social security, employer plans, self-funded retirement plans, estate planning, the special needs trust, and conservatorship. The last chapter lists parent organizations and resource organizations. (CR)
