Using a Web-based program he developed, one educator is helping students understand how their career and lifestyle choices are linked. MyLife, a Web-based life-planning program for young people, offers comprehensive budget activity in which participants develop simulations of their fantasy futures and calculate their future monthly bills--including rent or house payments, car payments, car maintenance, gasoline, insurance, utilities, groceries, clothing, and entertainment. MyLife also motivates students to explore careers to determine which occupations are good fits for them, as well as those that will support their lifestyle choices. The author, career counselor at Minot High School in Minot, North Dakota, created MyLife as an introduction to career exploration and planning. A life simulation activity like MyLife engages students by getting them interested in their futures and helping them to understand the importance of education--encouraging them to work harder in school.
