Sustainable Learning
Cadwell, Louise; Dillon, Robert
Principal Leadership, v12 n4 p32-36 Dec 2011
Green schools have moved into a new era that focuses on building a culture of sustainability in every aspect of learning in schools. In the early stages of sustainability education, the focus was on recycling and turning off the lights. Now, students and adults together are moving into the areas of advocacy and action that are based on a deep understanding of the interconnected nature of the earth. This article suggests that all green schools must cultivate understanding in five areas to be successful. The following five concepts are essential for green schools: (1) Learn from experience in the real world; (2) Connect the cycle of life from seed to table; (3) Understand the concept of "the commons"; (4) Embrace the whole child and the whole community; and (5) Build a culture of excellence in design.
