Lichens in the Churchyard
Oldershaw, Cally; Hilton, Barbara; Rocca, Alis
Primary Science, n114 p26-29 Sep-Oct 2010
The late Tom Chester, in his role as the British Lichen Society churchyard coordinator, did a great deal to encourage the use of the churchyard as an educational tool. In his honour, the Society has created an award as part of its "Lichen Project". When the Society approached the Association for Science Education (ASE) for help in contacting primary schools that might be interested in taking part in this project, Ponsbourne St. Mary's School, among others, was identified. The school is a small Church of England primary school, with about 80 children aged 4 to 11 years, situated next to Ponsbourne St. Mary's Church and churchyard in the Hertfordshire village of Newgate Street. In this article, the authors report on the "Lichen Project" and describe how a class of 7- and 8-year-olds achieved distinction as the first recipients of the Tom Chester Award from the British Lichen Society.
