Using "Moodle[TM]" (Open Source Software) with Grades 3-6
Menges, Beth
School Library Monthly, v26 n2 p21-22 Oct 2009
"Moodle[TM]," an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, is an open source software package that teachers can use to produce Internet-based courses and Web sites. "Open source" basically means that it is copyrighted, but it can be used at no cost as long as the user agrees to provide the source to others. "Moodle[TM]" can be basic in appearance or made more appealing with images. It takes time to create the site and some of the features take time and patience to use, but it is easy to edit and enhance after the initial time investment is made for set up. The use of "Moodle[TM]" with classes in the school library motivates students and helps the school librarian assess learning. Students respond favorably to using the technology tool. The instant feedback allows the school librarian to monitor the effectiveness of teaching and plan subsequent lessons based on progress made. The site can also be used to disseminate information, link to Web sites and files, and post forums or Wikis. All the information related to a course can be placed on one site and students can find everything they need in one location. (Contains 1 figure.)
