Graphic Design in Libraries: A Conceptual Process
Ruiz, Miguel
Public Services Quarterly, v10 n1 p36-47 2014
Providing successful library services requires efficient and effective communication with users; therefore, it is important that content creators who develop visual materials understand key components of design and, specifically, develop a holistic graphic design process. Graphic design, as a form of visual communication, is the process of integrating content and form to transfer a message (Costello, Youngblood, & Youngblood, 2012). This process does not occur in isolation, but rather is an integral component of a library's broader marketing plans and mission. In essence, the production of graphic design materials serves as an extension and reflection of the values of a library institution. Some libraries are fortunate enough to contract out their design projects, or less likely, have a graphic designer on staff in some capacity. In either case, the library has the ability to visually communicate through professional and cohesive designs that deliver appropriate messages. Many libraries, however, do not have the funds or human capital for this level of expertise. In many cases, individuals showing interest in art or design bravely offer their services as content creators, but are often confronted with both internal and external challenges. This column explores graphic design and technological concepts, considerations, and resources that will aid libraries with minimal expertise in developing a holistic design process that can integrate within a larger marketing framework and communicate effectively to the local library community.
