Guidelines for Libraries Serving Hospital Patients and Disabled People in the Community. IFLA Professional Reports, No. 2.
International Federation of Library Associations, The Hague (Netherlands).
These guidelines are based on the experiences of a number of librarians working in the area of library services for hospital patients and disabled people in the community, as well as work done previously by a number of national library associations. The guidelines indicate the essential features of services to disabled people and suggest alternative ways of setting up services according to local conditions. Topics covered include: the organization of library services for disabled people (needs and objectives, materials and equipment); non-medical hospital libraries including service in long-stay and specialist hospitals and institutions; services to housebound people (assessment of need, selection of material, publicity); education and training (general requirements, specific education and training, management, book and audiovisual material promotion); and representation within national library associations. Definitions of the terms used in the text and a list of standards and guidelines published by countries represented within the Section of Library Services to Hospital Patients and Handicapped Readers are also included.
