LUCY: A New Path to Diversity
Marrah, Arleezah; Mills, Roxanne
Library Media Connection, v29 n5 p14-15 Mar-Apr 2011
This article describes the Librarianship Upgrades for Children and Youth Services (LUCY), a multifaceted multicultural continuing education program for librarians developed by the Library and Information Science Program at Old Dominion University. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) funds LUCY through the Laura Bush 21st century program. Continuing education opportunities offered through LUCY provide diversity training, workshops, webinars, and graduate credit courses to professional children's and young adult librarians, school librarians, paraprofessionals, and all those who work with children or young adults in libraries throughout Virginia. These opportunities are also available to local librarians and to those with Internet access, and may provide learning experiences not normally available through district staff development or degree course work. LUCY team members believe that by exploring cultural diversity through literature, non-book resources, and technology, LUCY will enhance collection development, website design, program development, and other aspects of librarianship.
