Brewer, Joan; Worrell, Vicki
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n3 p8-11 May 2006
In this article, the author cites valuable lessons to be learned from reality television shows that can also be utilized by physical educators. The author states some of the reality television's messages like: (1) physical educators must know how to maximize the activity time during physical education class; (2) must have a plan of action so that all activities would have a purpose and would be aligned with state and national physical education standards; (3) must teach both the highly skilled and the average students; (4) must help future physical educators and young professionals establish quality practices by helping distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate activities and teaching strategies; (5) must remain dedicated and focused; (6) must collaborate with others since there are not only opportunities to develop professional relationship, but also to stay current and up-to-date in the profession; (7) should beware of becoming too comfortable with tried and true lesson plans used and discover new ideas and refreshing alternatives; (8) must know that beautifying an environment could truly make a difference in the way students learn; (9) should not just talk the talk, but walk the walk; and finally (10) they should try to create a stimulating environment with a spirited, energetic curriculum that challenges students. The author added that, though quality physical education has a responsibility to help students understand the benefits of regular participation in physical activity, the real challenge is to help students find activities they intrinsically enjoy, even when popular culture suggests physical activity is something to be avoided.
