No Child Left Behind and state testing mandate the study of government officials, at local, state, and federal levels, in judicial, legislative, and executive branches. At Wattles Elementary School in Troy, Michigan, test scores indicated that this was a weak area--not surprising since this always has been primarily a high school subject. In this article, the author, a library media specialist at Wattles Elementary, describes a format that could engage learners from kindergarten through fifth grade so that these concepts could be introduced, reinforced, and mastered. This format, designed along the lines of a television game show, was called "Name that Government Guru." Fifth grade students, under the direction of the library media specialist, used the Internet, social studies textbooks, experts in the field, and the encyclopedia to pull together all the facts they could find. Their task was to simplify all the jobs in each branch and each level of government and put it into words that younger students could comprehend. Starting at the national level, fact sheets were read on the morning news, one sheet per day during the week prior to the game show. Each classroom received a copy and posted it on their bulletin board. Fourth-grade students served as the game show contestants. "Name that Government Guru" proved very successful. The fifth grade students who did the initial research learned about the government; the fourth grade contestants became well-versed on government branches and levels; and students in the other grades used the fact sheets to help their classroom discover the correct government guru. A sample script and fact sheet are also provided.
