Teaching STEM to Millennial Students
Nikirk, Martin
Tech Directions, v71 n7 p13-15 Feb 2012
The "Millennial Generation" includes students enrolled in primary grades through high school. These students are also known as Digital Natives, Generation Why, the Net Generation, Generation Me, and i-Kids. The generation includes ages ranging from approximately 7 to 30. This is the generation who have always had technology integrated into their lives--they are connected 24/7. Their experience of the world contrasts greatly with that of adults aged 35 and older, for whom technology is typically an add-on to life. The brains of Millennial students are wired differently--a fact that is important for STEM educators to be aware of and to address. STEM teachers know that it is important to teach in ways that will facilitate student learning. This article presents 10 teaching strategies that will help address Millennial students' "brain connections." (Contains 1 figure.)
