Powerful Feelings: Exploring the Affective Domain of Informal and Arts-Based Learning
Lawrence, Randee Lipson
New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, n120 p65-77 Win 2008
This article looks at the ways in which people learn informally through artistic expression such as dance, drama, poetry, music, literature, film, and all of the visual arts and how people access this learning through their emotions. The author begins with a look at the limitations of relying primarily on technical-rational learning processes. Learning through the arts is then explored through the theoretical lenses of transformative, experiential, and indigenous learning. The author next examines the affective domain of arts-based learning in teaching for social justice. Finally, implications for adult education are discussed.
