Two financial aid programs sponsored by Michigan Economics for Human Development (MEHD) to benefit migrant and seasonal agricultural workers and their dependents are described in this guide: (1) the Migrant Scholarship Program, for degree programs at participating Michigan colleges and universities, and (2) the Less-Than-Classroom Program, for non-degree, vocational programs at colleges and private occupational schools. The programs' purpose, eligibility criteria, application process, and selection criteria are described. Eligibility criteria are migrant and seasonal farmworker status, high school diploma or equivalent, and U.S. citizenship or permanent visa. Selection is based on the migrant student's potential to successfully pursue a given course of study, on motivation, financial need, and career choice. The guide also provides general information about financial aid packages (scholarships, loans, grants, and student employment) to supplement the MEHD migrant aid which is limited to $1000 each year for two years. Fifteen Michigan colleges participating in the migrant educational opportunities program are listed with information about admission and financial aid requirements, housing, Chicano and migrant student organizations, special student services, and noteworthy courses of study.
