Scaling New Heights: Community Colleges Tap Newfound Prestige and Confidence to Pull off Increasingly Ambitious Campaigns
Heaton, Paul
CURRENTS, v38 n3 p22-26 Mar 2012
A growing list of community colleges of all sizes is seeking--and raising--previously unheard-of sums through major campaigns, despite having significantly fewer staff members than their four-year counterparts. According to a recent CASE study of community college foundations, more than half of the respondents said they were planning, conducting, or concluding a major campaign. In this article, the author discusses how community colleges tap newfound prestige and confidence to pull off increasingly ambitious campaigns. Experienced fundraisers say it starts with adroit leadership from presidents and volunteers united behind a strong, clear vision. Then, development offices need to evaluate existing activities and resources in order to focus on the campaign. While making changes and raising expectations for both staff and volunteers can be challenging in the short term, schools are seeing long-term benefits to their development operations as a result. Fundraisers note that donors like to support successful programs, so major campaigns--done well--provide momentum and long-term benefits.
