Principals' Leadership Styles and ESL Teachers' Job Satisfaction
Jackson, K. A'jaydin
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
The purpose of this research study was to examine principals' leadership styles and how and what extent it impacted teachers' job satisfaction. Principals' leadership styles were examined by middle and high school teachers' perceptions. This study drew from 10 middle and 10 high schools in a large school district located in Texas. Participants included certified English Second Language (ESL) teachers who have taught at least one year in their content area. The teachers were given the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, or MLQ (Bass & Avolio, 2005) and the Teachers' Job Satisfaction Questionnaire, TJSQ (Lester, 1987) to complete for this study. The Pearson's correlation coefficient measured the MLQ and TJSQ. Data revealed that there were significant correlations between several of the principals' leadership styles and teachers' job satisfaction variables. Dr. Kerri Brown's 2009 study, "Educators Jumpship: A Study of Leadership Style and Teachers' Job Satisfaction," greatly influenced this research study. For the purpose of acknowledging Dr. Brown's (2009) study, this research study will highlight certain differences and similarities from her work specifically in Ch.4 and 5. Recommendations for future studies include utilizing more than one school district and employing a larger sample population from both middle and high school levels. Findings from this study could help improve principals' leadership styles and teachers' job satisfaction in the overall scope of education.
