In a September 2013 interview, Thomas Ehrlich and Ernestine Fu--whose passion for public service is manifested in differing ways and from two dramatically different generational standpoints--discussed insights from their co-authored book, "Civic Work, Civic Lessons: Two Generations Reflect on Public Service (2013)." Septuagenarian Tom Ehrlich, a drum major for the necessity of and joy in civic engagement for the public good, has devoted his entire career to public service and nonprofit leadership. Ernestine Fu was an undergraduate while co-writing the book but had already established herself as a social entrepreneur and dynamic campus leader by organizing her peers to help those in need. Four themes emerge from this interview: (1) For an older generation, civic work predominantly means work in government at the local, state, or national level. (2) The current generation is more likely to perform civic work through nonprofit organizations that provide direct help to people in need. (3) In service learning, the interaction of academic study and community service, guided by structured reflection, offers students opportunities to consider what is important to them--and why. (4) In a growing number of model programs, a focus on education for political engagement results in greater political understanding, skills, motivation, and expectations for future political involvement.
