Emotional Intelligence: The Contribution to Leadership Skills in Female Catholic Elementary School Principals
Dziewior, Jane M.
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Edgewood College
Past research was not clear what the relationship was between emotional intelligence (EI) and leadership style for school principals. This researcher examined EI and its contribution to leadership skills of 22 female Catholic elementary school principals. The method included a self-reported questionnaire of leadership style and EI to explore if there was a relationship between EI and leadership style. The basic findings were: (1) Participants demonstrated EI and leadership skills, and both EI and leadership skills were interwoven. However, group strengths and weaknesses emerged. (2) Social competency was a strength across EI and anchored into the self-reported leadership skills. But, noted an area for improvement was self skills. It appeared that the participants concentrated on leadership when it involved others more than on their own self-awareness. A main conclusion is that EI contributes to leadership skills.
