Community College Student Affairs Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness: A Multiple-Case Study
Parrent, Jonathan Vince
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Kentucky
Community colleges are the initial introduction to postsecondary education and training for thousands of students. As pressure for institutional accountability increases from external stakeholders, the performance of two-year colleges is becoming more critical. Within these institutions, student affairs departments in community colleges provide key support programs to students that increase persistence, graduation, and transfer. In the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools: Commission on Colleges, all institutions seeking regional accreditation must have in place a process of institutional effectiveness to ensure their campus engages in a thoughtful process to conduct planning, evaluate the results of these actions, and make improvements in practice based on the analysis of various assessment tools. This multiple case study explored perspectives of chief student affairs officers at three community colleges in the accreditation region about their campus process for meeting this institutional effectiveness mandate, their leadership within their departments for this work, and issues that emerged during the course of this important process. Key findings in the study support the importance of leadership in driving continuous improvement on campus and the need for senior student affairs leaders to adopt the language or organizational learning to support these efforts.
