In 1995, to determine the nature of law enforcement services provided on college and university campuses, the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) surveyed 4-year institutions of higher education with 2,500 or more students. An update to this original study covering the 2004-05 school year was recently completed, providing a unique opportunity to examine 10-year trends in campus law enforcement on a variety of fronts. The two surveys provide definitive comparison measures of the use of armed and sworn officers, agency staffing levels, diversity of sworn officers, officer salaries, training requirements for officers, screening methods used in hiring officers, and the number of serious crime reports received by campus law enforcement authorities. The latter survey also provides an opportunity to examine the emergence of community policing strategies on campus, as well as emergency preparedness activities that have taken on a new level of importance in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
