The REAL (Relevant, Exciting, Applicable Lessons) Project: Thematic Language Intervention
Catt, Merrill; Neeley, Richard A.; Lovins, Shelby
Education, v131 n3 p587-599 Spr 2011
This pilot study investigated the effectiveness of using a thematic intervention approach for children with language disorders. Twenty students receiving language therapy at a university speech and hearing clinic were selected as participants in this pilot study. This pilot project was entitled the REAL Project with the term REAL being an acronym for relevant, exciting, applicable lessons. A pre-test and post-test design was used for data collection to determine student progress in thematic language therapy. Additional data were gathered regarding the effectiveness of thematic intervention using surveys completed by student clinicians and parents/caregivers. The results indicated that all students participating in the REAL Project experienced sizable growth in language skills over the course of the REAL Project. Student clinician and parent/caregiver data also indicated that these groups perceived that thematic intervention in a naturalistic context provided strong improvement in student language skills over the course of the semester. In summary, the REAL Project was successful as a therapy model for improving communication and literacy skills in students with language disorders. (Contains 4 tables.)
