The Entrepreneurial Domains of American Higher Education. ASHE Higher Education Report, Volume 34, Number 5
Mars, Matthew M.; Metcalf, Amy Scott
ASHE Higher Education Report, v34 n5 p1-111 Feb 2009
This volume draws on a diverse set of literatures to represent the various ways in which entrepreneurship is understood in and applied to higher education. It provides a platform for debate for those considering applications of entrepreneurial principles to academic research and practices. Using academic entrepreneurship in the United States as the organizing point of discussion, the authors examine the definitions, theoretical constructs, contradictions, and applications of entrepreneurship specific to higher education trends and practice. They also consider how academic entrepreneurship occurs not only in research institutions but also in liberal arts institutions, community colleges, and for-profit institutions. The primary contribution of this work is not the summary of entrepreneurship-related literature but the development of a framework from which scholars, administrators, and policymakers can begin to evaluate the appropriate boundaries and applications of entrepreneurship in particular higher education institutions. The two purposes for writing this volume are to: (1) organize existing higher education literature and research in a way that is conceptually sound and useful for understanding the entrepreneurial landscape of higher education, and (2) provide a framework useful for debating the application of entrepreneurial principles and practices in higher education. Following an introductory chapter ("Entrepreneurship in the Contemporary Academy"), the next chapter, "Theoretical Traditions of Entrepreneurship," begins with a concise but comprehensive overview of the theories relating to entrepreneurship, mainly from the management and economics literature. "The New Economy and the Entrepreneurial Academy" continues with a critical overview of that subject and a discussion of academic capitalism. "Contemporary Issues in the Entrepreneurial Academy" discusses several contemporary issues for entrepreneurship in higher education, and "Entrepreneurship Education" explores in detail the literature specific to the emergence, growth, and cross-disciplinary expansion of entrepreneurship education. The volume concludes with a summary of the dialogue, a description of potential future directions for entrepreneurship in the academy, and recommendations for further research. Name and subject indices are included.
