The Getty Foundation's six-year Campus Heritage Initiative, which awarded preservation planning grant funds to 86 U.S. colleges and universities, ended in 2007. As the early grantees completed their projects, the foundation wisely noted the abundance of excellent information about the preservation of historic campus resources contained in the final project reports. In October 2008, the foundation awarded a grant to the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) to develop a plan for the future use of these resources. The charge to SCUP was to analyze the reports and then disseminate the information to the greater higher education and planning community. The SCUP research team obtained the reports, identified important topics, and prepared a final report and summary for each institution. In the course of reviewing the final reports as a member of the research team, the author noted that multiple themes consistently emerged, some with more impact than others. The author has selected and outlined the following topics for discussion in this article: (1) Architectural style; (2) Importance of landscape; (3) Stewardship of the land; (4) Adaptive reuse; (5) Mid-20th-century buildings; (6) Importance of additional design elements; (7) Use of students; (8) Development of systems used to evaluate and prioritize buildings and landscapes; (9) Training and maintenance manuals; (10) Creation of stewardship leaders and champions; and (11) Use of preservation plans, reporting methods, and community involvement.
