The Lion and the Lamb: Learning about Tolerance and Compassion
Johnson, Judith C.
Arts & Activities, v146 n4 p40-41 Dec 2009
As the holidays approached this year, the author was looking for something new and different from poinsettias, Christmas trees and snowy landscapes for third-graders. This is a special class who is up for new ideas and art adventures. They had not yet used the changeable markers, which are great fun for pattern and design work. This article presents a holiday project that incorporates seven elements of design. This project uses the "Lion and the Lamb" concept from the Old Testament. In this project, elementary students discuss tolerance and compassion; learn who Edward Hicks was, what memorable work he did and what his artistic style was; create their own artistic style; and discuss how the markers they use will affect their style.
