The Shift in Generational Leadership
Goings, Amy Morrison
Community College Journal, v86 n6 p6 Jun-Jul 2016
Amy Morrison Goings was 40 years old in 2013 when she began her presidency at Lake Washington Institute of Technology. She didn't consider herself a representative of all Generation X community college presidents, but as a member of this tight-knit group, she does feel a need to share her insight into what's on the minds of that community. Although Boomer presidents are exiting at an alarming rate and, frankly, there are not enough Gen-Xer's prepared to take the leadership reins, Goings feels that those who do step into the role of president find that they must blaze their own trail. As a Gen-X president, she is also aware that the wave of Boomer retirements affects all levels of the college. Goings closes by thanking her Boomer colleagues as they pass the baton on in the coming years, and welcomes her millennial colleagues to the most rewarding career of their lives.
