Improving Adolescent Mathematics: Findings from Research
Peck, Julia McClintock
Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL)
This publication focuses mainly on research designed to improve adolescents learning of mathematics. Sometimes it provides insights into interventions to help all students learn more mathematics and sometimes special interventions that focus on the particular needs of nonproficient mathematics students. However, no intervention should diminish the learning of one group for the sake of improving the learning of another group. The intended audience for this publication includes middle and high school teachers and administrators, leadership teams, special educators, curriculum specialists, and district supervisors. Other school personnel (e.g., superintendents and school board members), parents, and community members might profit from some of the information included. Through study of this publication, school leaders and faculty should be able to work collaboratively to develop schoolwide or districtwide plans to improve mathematics learning by incorporating research-tested practices into instruction, assessment, professional development, and school structures to support struggling learners. It addresses a number of critical needs identified as priorities by educators in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington through the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) annual needs assessment. The following are appended: (1) Glossary; (2) Teacher Resources; (3) Definitions of Study Types; (4) Research at a Glance; and (5) References.
