Finding a Mentor for High School Independent Scientific Research
Hess, Amber
Understanding Our Gifted, v21 n1 p13-15 Fall 2008
Being involved with scientific research in high school is rewarding and fun. Research enables students to: (1) learn in depth about a particular area; (2) meet other students who are also enthusiastic about learning and who have done amazing research; and (3) earn scholarships for college if the research is entered in competitions. Completing a research project is ideal for young people who want to challenge themselves and learn more about an advanced topic. Research provides useful skills that are not necessarily learned in a classroom. For example, instead of a teacher setting the agenda, the "student" must be in charge of her own schedule and learn how to motivate herself. Research also forces a student to be very creative, something that doesn't always happen in school. Although everyone faces challenges throughout the research process, getting started is often the most difficult part. Pinpointing a project idea can be intimidating. Perhaps a student already has a topic idea for his research but needs access to a lab with the right equipment. While doing background research or carrying out the experiment he might have questions that are difficult to answer. Finding a mentor is helpful in these situations. Students should find their own mentors; it is unlikely researchers will be impressed when a high school teacher or parent does all the work. This article provides some options that students should explore in finding a mentor.
