Kitchen Corner
Campbell, Sharon
School Arts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v103 n9 p48 May 2004
This brief article describes one third-grade classroom's experience engaging in a lesson plan inspired by Larry Yanez's "Cocina Jaiteca" and images of the cheerful kitchen. In the lesson, the students were to draw their own kitchens based on their observations of the many details in Yanez's kitchen example, such as the calendar on the wall, refrigerator magnets, fly swatter, clock, and outside view. When the drawings were complete, they were put on display and parents reported the accuracy of their child's representation of the family kitchen. The objective of the lesson was for students to understand the fact that connections exist between all humans cross-culturally. Thus, it was important that students discovered interpersonal connections by studying the Yanez example along with their own art and the art of their peers.
