Open Admissions: The Pros and Cons.
Barzun, Jacques; And Others
The Council for Basic Education sponsored an all-day symposium on open admissions in 1971. This booklet contains the full text of the addresses given on that occasion, as well as the major part of the discussion among the panelists and answers to questions from the audience. The aim of the symposium was not only to provide information about existing forms of open admissions, but also to permit a frank exchange of conflicting views about a highly controversial issue. The addresses presented at the symposium were: "Varieties of Open Admissions" by Mortimer Smith; "The Open Admissions Freshman at City University of New York" by Seymour C. Hyman; "Open Admissions and the Politics of the Absurd" by Irving Kristol; "Open Admissions-One Century Later" by E. Laurence Chalmers;"Advantages and Disadvantages of Open Admissions-And Some History" by Kenneth B. Clark; and "Some Skeptical Observations on Open Admissions" by Robert Nisbet. (HS)
