Developing a Lifetime Adventure-Skills Curriculum, the Southeast Alaska Model: Multi-Age Classrooms, Far-Flung Schools, No Physical Educators--and You Thought You Had Problems?
Wallstrom, Timothy J.
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v76 n6 p36 Aug 2005
This article discusses the project developed by the Southeast Island School District (SISD) to improve their physical education curriculum. The challenge faced by SISD was to determine a way to provide training that had immediate impact. An important aspect of the project was the incorporation of adventure activities--such as using kayaks, snowshoes, and bikes to access nontraditional but authentic learning environments--across the established classroom curriculum (Cone & Cone, 2001; Jahnke & Hamson, 1999). In order to provide training to all of the teachers simultaneously, district-wide inservices were held. A primary goal of the project was to provide training in culturally appropriate activities that would support physical fitness, take advantage of the natural environment, and allow adaptation to cross-curricular learning. Listed as follows are the chosen activities and the rationales for their selection.
