This study was conducted in order to understand the factors that contribute to the identity development of Punjabi American women in college. The identified factors are useful for enhancing the educational and psychological development of Punjabi American women in college. A qualitative phenomenological design was implemented to collect data from 21 participants to identify factors that most significantly contributed to their identity development. Participants were recruited through purposeful and network sampling from throughout Northern California. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 24 years old, all identified with the Sikh religion, and were currently enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program. Three forms of data collection were employed to gather information from participants. Participants were randomly assigned to a structured individual interview, a focus group dialogue, or a questionnaire group. After data were collected, a thematic analysis was conducted in order to identify the factors that most significantly influenced identity development among participants. It was hypothesized that religion, level of education, and familial, personal, and societal expectations would most greatly impact the identity development of Punjabi American women. The two most prominent factors that influence identity development that emerged during the analysis are familial and societal expectations of women. These findings are consistent with the literature reviewed and could serve to enhance the quality of educational and psychological services for Punjabi American women. It is hoped that these findings can be used to enhance the psychosocial development of Punjabi American women on college campuses in the United States.
