The Economics of Gender in Mexico: Work, Family, State, and Market. Directions in Development.
Katz, Elizabeth G., Ed.; Correia, Maria C., Ed.
The studies compiled in this book analyze the effects of gender on the well-being of individuals and households in Mexico. Analyses examine gender issues over the life cycle, including education and child labor, adult urban and rural labor participation, and the situation of elderly Mexican men and women. Following an introduction by Elizabeth Katz and Maria Correia, the chapters are: (1) "Gender Differences in Education in Mexico" (Susan W. Parker, Carla Pederzini); (2) "The Impact of Child Labor and School Dropout on Human Capital: Gender Differences in Mexico" (Felicia Marie Knaul); (3) "Breadwinner versus Caregiver: Labor Force Participation and Sectoral Choice over the Mexican Business Cycle" (Wendy Cunningham); (4) "A Gender Perspective on 'Maquila' Employment and Wages in Mexico" (Susan Fleck); (5) "Explaining Gender Differences in Earnings in the Microenterprise Sector" (Susana M. Sanchez, Jose A. Pagan); (6) "Gender Issues in Workforce Participation and Self-Employment in Rural Mexico" (Jose A. Pagan, Susana M. Sanchez); (7) "Gender, Generation, and Off-Farm Employment on the Mexican 'Ejido'" (Elizabeth Katz); (8) "Welfare of Male and Female Elderly in Mexico: A Comparison" (Susan W. Parker, Rebeca Wong); and (9) "Conclusions and Policy Implications" (Elizabeth Katz, Maria Correia). Each chapter contains references. (Contains 83 tables, 13 figures, 8 boxes, and author profiles.)
