Modern Communication: Exploring Physiological Transmission through Tech-Savvy Analogies
Hollabaugh, Christopher R.; Milanick, Mark A.
Advances in Physiology Education, v38 n2 p176-180 Jun 2014
Analogies are often helpful for students to grasp key physiological concepts; sometimes the technical jargon makes the concept seem more complex than it actually is. In this article the authors provide several analogies for information transfer processes that sometimes confuse students. For an analogy to be useful, of course, it needs to be something that students can relate to and understand. Because many students today are technology and social media savvy, the authors have tried to develop some of these analogies around concepts that would be familiar to such students--such as troubleshooting the neuromuscular junction using computer to printer communication as an analogy. The authors have also found that analogies are useful at several different stages of the learning process. Clean, insightful analogies can be used when first introducing a subject. In addition, two other examples are illustrated in this article. One example can be used to engage students about the general problem-solving process as well as to motivate an understanding of the steps in problem solving. Another example is to engage students in higher order thinking.
