Restructuring Revisited: Changing Academic Structures in UK Universities
Hogan, John
Perspectives: Policy and Practice in Higher Education, v16 n4 p129-135 2012
In a rapidly changing external environment, for many universities, restructuring of the academic organisation is the most important leadership challenge. In this article, the author provides an analysis of academic restructuring in UK universities. Using the "Commonwealth Universities Yearbook", he looked at the changes in academic structures during a five-year period between 2002 and 2007, focusing on structures that deliver teaching. While it is obvious that academic structures need to change over time, the author argues that it is difficult to judge the effectiveness of the rapid restructuring apparent in the UK. No systematic study has been undertaken and such a study would be challenging. (Contains 1 table.)
