Motivating Students in Fitness Activities
Wilkinson, Carol; Hunter, Mike
Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, v22 n1 p18-21 Sep-Oct 2008
Physical educators have a responsibility to motivate students to develop personal fitness. This is a critical concept as physical education is the only part of the curriculum capable of meeting the health needs of students regarding physical activity. Current physical educators must promote fitness in ways that motivate students to engage in physical activities. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to stress the importance of motivating students to develop personal fitness. The authors describe the Sport Education (SE) model and offer some recommendations for using the SE model in teaching a fitness unit. Some examples of activities focusing on cardiovascular endurance, upper body strength, and flexibility are presented.
