Can We Hear the Student Voice?

The Student Voice project was launched in January 2007. The aim was to provide a method of encouraging students to become actively involved in decisions about their own learning and empowering them with appropriate ways to do so. Ninety-two pupils were divided up into specific focus groups (a voice). These "voices" include: (1) the "Blue Voice", which focused on teaching and learning; (2) the "Red Voice", which focused on behavior, independent learning and individual progress; and (3) the "Green Voice", which focused on the environment of the school. The training for these students was delivered by the University of East London (UEL) in a joint venture with the school. This also enabled the University to carry out its own research by looking at how the students developed as active researchers. This article presents a summary of the findings of this project.
