Going with the "Flow"
Monaghan, Peter
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n11 pB16 Nov 2008
John McCain's announcement in late August that Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska would be his running mate got the attention of the news media, to say the least. The public heard more than enough from pundits, politicos, and pollsters. But they heard little from another group with opinions aplenty: scholars who specialize in how the news and entertainment media convey and frame their content. Noticing that absence, "FlowTV," an online journal produced by graduate students, published a special issue on the media and Palin less than six weeks after the nomination. This article reports on "FlowTV," which offers articles on such subjects as the satirization of the candidate, confusion over how to cover her, her relation to "the feminine ideal," European expressions of concern about her, and what Marshall McLuhan might have made of Palin.
