John Carroll University (JCU) is a Jesuit Catholic institution located in University Heights, approximately 10 miles east of Cleveland, Ohio. Founded in 1888, the university has a population of 3,400 undergraduates and 800 graduate students. The Division of Student Affairs at JCU comprises 11 units. The mission of the division is the same as that of the university: to develop women and men who have the knowledge and character to lead and to serve. Members of the John Carroll campus community have varying expectations of Student Affairs. At one end of the continuum, many faculty members are "educationally conservative," believing that the rest of the university exists solely to support the academic mission. At the other end of the spectrum, there are some faculty members and academic administrators at John Carroll who do acknowledge the need to create a seamless learning environment in collaboration with Student Affairs. This chapter provides a glimpse of student affairs assessment at John Carroll University including a specific example of assessment, tips to implementing assessment at an institution, and barriers encountered when implementing the process at John Carroll University.
