Overcoming Attention Deficit Disorders in Children, Adolescents, and Adults. Fourth Edition
Jordan, Dale R.
PRO-ED, Inc.
Previously published as "Attention Deficit Disorder: ADHD and ADD Syndromes," this popular book is now in its fourth edition. It provides up-to-date research and more complete explanations of how Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) interfere with classroom learning, behavior at home, job performance, and social skills development. The cutting-edge content is presented in an easily understood and implemented format. The reader will be guided step-by-step through descriptions of the causes and symptoms of ADHD and ADD and of the accompanying "shadow syndromes" that create emotional and social problems. This book is divided into eight chapters. The first chapter of the book reviews neurological development from conception to adulthood to see where attention deficits originate throughout the human brain. This is followed by an exploration of the critical issue of executive function, along with its counterpart, executive dysfunction in the second chapter. Next, chapters three and four investigate the challenges of ADHD and ADD in the classroom and the workplace. Chapter five describes the many faces of ADHD and ADD that bring conflict and disruption to the classroom, family life, and workplace. The profiles of other kinds of learning differences that often imitate ADHD and ADD are presented in chapter six. Following this, chapter seven explains why diet is critical for many individuals with attention deficits, along with the role that medication often plays in overcoming ADHD and ADD. In the concluding chapter of the book, accommodation and compensation strategies that help persons overcome ADHD and ADD are presented. Four appendixes provide: the helpful "Jordan Executive Function Index" for children and adults; the "Jordan Attention Deficit Scale"; and sources of help and information about attention deficit issues.
