Job Satisfaction among Texas School Couselors

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of selected demographic and educational factors on the job satisfaction of school counselors. Specifically, this study was concerned with the influenced of the variables ethnicity, gender, age, years of working experience, level of education, and school level on the level of job satisfaction of school counselors. A survey design was employed in this investigation to collect and analyze the data. One hundred thirty (130) counselors who were members of Texas School Counselor Association were selected to participate in this empirical investigation. Two instruments entitled the Abridged Job Descriptive Index and the Job in General Scale were used to gather the data. Both of the selected instruments were found to have excellent content validity with internal reliability coefficients ranging from 0.07 to 0.92. In addition, a demographic survey was used. Furthermore, the data were tested through the application of the One-Way Analysis of Variance and the Scheffe follow-up test. The following conclusions were drawn from the findings of the study: (1) the level of education and ethnicity had a little impact of the general job satisfaction scores, (2) it appeared that counselors' age, years of working experience and school level had no influence on their general job satisfaction score, (3) male and female counselors had similar general job satisfaction scores, (4) it appeared the level of education, ethnicity, age, and years of experience of counselors' had no influence on their pay dimension scores, and (5) African-American and Hispanic counselors had significantly higher promotion job satisfaction scores.
