Cartwheels on the Keyboard: Computer-Based Literacy Instruction in an Elementary Classroom
Carroll, Maureen
International Reading Association (NJ3)
This book helps readers imagine new instructional possibilities, try new classroom activities, and question their own teaching--learning process through the use of computers to support student literacy growth. Maureen Carroll shares her study of how one teacher and her elementary-grade students integrated computer-based literacy instruction into their curriculum, and shows the diverse ways in which computers both foster and hinder literacy development. Included are helpful lessons for integrating computer use in the classroom, as well as "Reflection Points" and classroom vignettes to provoke thought and discussion. Following a note from the series editor; a section listing the members of the Kids InSight review board; and the acknowledgments section, the following chapters are included: (1) "Everyday Explorations and Lifelong Learners: Introducing Computer Technology in the Classroom"; (2) "The Biggest Thing in the World Is...: The Literacy Curriculum and Social Constructivism"; (3) "I'm Glad We Could All Put Our Heads Together: Voices and Values in the Classroom Community"; (4) "Cooperating Classmates and Colliding Friends: Computer Collaborations"; (5) "Jellyfish, Melodrama, and the Twilight Zone: Computer Explorations"; (6) "Spiral Stairs and Musical Magic: Computer Play in the Classroom"; and (7) "It's Always OK to Ask a Buddy: Challenges and Opportunities in Technology Integration". Appended are: (1) Classroom Data Analysis; and (2) Lesson Plans for Integrating Computer Use in the Classroom; followed by references and the index.
