Evidence of Learning: A Conversation with Jay McTighe
Richardson, Judith
Principal Leadership, v9 n1 p30-34 Sep 2008
This article presents an interview with Jay McTighe, an educational author and consultant. In his conversation, McTighe discussed best ways to find out how well students are learning and the evidence of understanding that teachers and administrators must see. He also talked about the five steps to support appropriate assessments. These steps include: (1) Unpacking content standards and identifying the most important and enduring ideas and essential skills in each course; (2) Deciding what is acceptable evidence of achievement of learning goals; (3) Evaluating students' performance on assessments; (4) Selecting samples of student work to illustrate performance standards; and (5) Identifying needed improvement actions.
